Authorities carried out a security operation in Complexo da Mare, an area located in the northern Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 26, resulting in the deaths of at least three suspects. An armed confrontation took place between suspects and security forces. Reports indicate that the operation, which involved around 18 0 security force personnel, also affected traffic along the Red Line expressway (Linha Vermelha) and drivers in nearby areas got out of their cars to lay on the floor while shots were being fired. Authorities have not reported any civilian casualties.

Authorities have briefly closed the Red Line Expressway during the operation. Significant disruptions along main routes nearby were also reported early Sept. 26. As of 08:10, all routes have been reopened in the area.

Public transport was suspended, classes canceled, and local health centers closed in the area. Heightened security and significant disruptions are likely to continue through at least Sept. 26.
