Informational

Event

The government in Palau has declared a public holiday Sept. 30 to observe Independence Day, which occurs annually Oct. 1. Widespread business closures are likely to mark the day. Official celebrations will take place at the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge from 09:00. While most events will occur on the Koror side of the bridge, officials also have planned festivities in Airai. A fireworks display will begin after 18:30.

Authorities will likely increase security near celebration sites near the bridge in Koror and Airai. Localized transport disruptions are possible, particularly in the evening when participation in events will likely peak.

Advice

Unless attending events, consider limited exposure to event sites due to the potential for increased security and transport disruptions. Confirm transport status before embarking on travel. Allow additional time to reach destinations, especially if crossing the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge.
