Brazil: Heightened security is likely to continue in the lead-up to the second round of national elections on Oct. 30 /update 1
Heightened security and campaign events are likely to continue in Brazil in the lead-up to the second round of national elections Oct. 30.
Event
Authorities will likely continue to deploy heightened security nationwide before and during the Oct. 30 second round of general elections, including at any campaign events and election-related facilities. No candidate was able to obtain 50 percent of the national vote in the first round of elections Oct. 2. Large-scale political events and some demonstrations have occurred in recent weeks. These will almost certainly continue in the coming days. Hundreds to a few thousand people will likely attend the biggest events.
Security measures on the second election day will likely prompt road closures, particularly near polling stations, and may cause disruptions to travel and business operations. Clashes between supporters of rival political groups remain possible before, during, and after the vote, particularly in urban areas.
Context
The second-round of the presidential election will be between the incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro, and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil's president from 2003 to 2010.
Advice
Exercise caution in the lead-up to and during voting, particularly near large gatherings and in the proximity of polling stations. Make allowances for possible localized transport disruptions near said stations. Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
