Somalian security forces have ended the siege at the Hawakal Hotel in Kismayo and killed the assailants late Oct. 23. Earlier on Oct. 23, gunfire erupted shortly after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the hotel. The subsequent explosion killed nine people and wounded at least 47 others. According to authorities, there were four attackers. The Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Heightened security measures, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely near the impact area over the coming days. Additional similar attacks by militant groups remain likely in the region.

Exercise a high degree of caution in the impacted location and heed authorities' instructions. Maintain a very low profile, restrict nighttime movements, vary routines, and move in guarded convoys. Minimize exposure to potential targets, including places of worship, security installations, markets, and other crowded locations. Carry proper identification and travel documents at all times.
