Armenia: Anti-government activists to protest in Yerevan Nov. 5
Anti-government activists to protest at France Square in Yerevan, Armenia, from 15:00 Nov. 5.
Event
Opposition activists plan to protest in central Yerevan on Nov. 5. Activists are denouncing the government's policy over ongoing peace negotiations with Azerbaijan relating to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory. Participants will gather at France Square from 15:00; attendance could reach thousands of people.
Additional police will deploy to monitor the action. Large crowds and associated security measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely result in localized business and transport disruptions. Isolated clashes between activists and security services cannot be ruled out; police are likely to be quick to arrest disobedient protesters.
Context
Activists in Armenia are opposed to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's handling of negotiations with Azerbaijan, particularly his apparent willingness to offer territorial concessions to Azerbaijan as part of a future peace treaty. Demonstrations are likely to persist in Yerevan and elsewhere. A large rally was also reported in the town of Stepanakert Oct. 30.
Advice
Avoid protest-affected areas as a routine security precaution. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
