Armenia: Demonstrations against Russain president Vladimir Putin and CSTO planned in Yerevan Nov. 23

Activists will protest Russian president Vladimir Putin and CSTO in Yerevan, Armenia, Nov. 23. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Political activists plan separate demonstrations in Yerevan on Nov. 23 to denounce Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). In the earlier of the two demonstrations, the "No to CSTO" activist group will gather in Freedom Square at 13:00, where organizers will demand Armenia withdraw from the Russia-led security bloc. Separately, the National Democratic Pole party will lead a demonstration in Garegin Nzhdehi Square from 15:00 to denounce Putin and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Although attendance levels at each gathering are unclear, the demonstrations coincide with the CSTO summit being held in Yerevan; tight security is likely throughout the city center as various heads of state enter and exit the city. Additional police are also likely to monitor the gatherings. Precedent suggests demonstrators will march on streets surrounding their announced protest locations, prompting road travel disruptions. Isolated clashes between activists and security services cannot be ruled out; police are likely to be quick to arrest unruly protesters.

Advice

Avoid protest-affected areas as a routine security precaution. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
