Bangladesh: Authorities extend tourist travel ban in parts of Bandarban District, Chittagong Division, through Nov. 8 /update 2

Authorities extend tourist travel ban in areas of Bandarban District, Bangladesh, through Nov. 8 amid ongoing security operation.

Warning

Event

Authorities have extended an existing ban on tourist travel to Alikadam, Ruma, Rowangchhari, and Thanchi upazilas in the Bandarban District through at least Nov. 8 amid an ongoing security operation targeting suspected militants in the area. The directive was originally slated to end on Nov. 4. Officials could extend the ban further or expand it to encompass additional areas depending on the needs of the security operation.

Authorities will maintain a very high security posture for the duration of the travel ban. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Isolated clashes between security forces and suspected militants cannot be ruled out.

Context

Bandarban District has historically been plagued by insurgent activity; multiple foreign governments routinely advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the district. The current security operation is not necessarily indicative of a further escalation in regional security risks, which remain high.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of caution if operating in Bandarban District. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Stay away from windows. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
