Bangladesh: Authorities revise tourist travel ban directive in parts of Bandarban District, Chittagong Division, through Nov. 12 /update 3

Authorities have revised a temporary ban on tourist travel to four upazilas in Bandarban District effective Nov. 8. Under the new directive, the measure has been lifted in Alikadam Upazila but extended through at least Nov. 12 in Ruma, Rowangchhari, and Thanchi upazilas. Officials issued the directive to conduct a security operation targeting suspected militants in the impacted areas. The order had been slated to end on Nov. 8. Officials could extend the ban further or expand it to encompass additional areas depending on the needs of the security operation.

Authorities will maintain a very high security posture for the duration of the travel ban. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Isolated clashes between security forces and suspected militants cannot be ruled out.

Context

Bandarban District has historically been plagued by insurgent activity; multiple foreign governments routinely advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the district. The current security operation is not necessarily indicative of a further escalation in regional security risks, which remain high.
