Bangladesh: Unionized bus drivers expand work stoppage to Barguna and Patuakhali districts Nov. 4-5 /update 1

Unionized bus drivers expand labor action to Barguna and Patuakhali districts in Barisal Division, Bangladesh, Nov. 4-5.

Warning

Event

Bus drivers affiliated with the Barisal Bus Owners' Group and related associations have expanded their planned Nov. 4-5 work stoppage to Barguna, and Patuakhali districts in Barisal Division; the strike had previously been announced for Barisal District. The purpose of the action is to demand government enforcement of an existing ban on illegal vehicles, including three-wheeled autorickshaws, on highways. Organizers claim passenger busses in Barguna and Patuakhali districts will be suspended through Nov. 5.

Three-wheeler driver unions opposed to the demand will also hold a strike from Nov. 4-5. Both work stoppages will coincide with the planned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) anti-government rally on Nov. 5. Unless averted, the labor action will likely cause the suspension of the autorickshaw, as well as local and long-distance bus services on multiple routes connecting Barisal to other cities; transport hubs, such as the Nathullabad Central Bus Terminal, may suspend operations. Alternative means of transport are likely to face increased congestion and demand.

Organizers have not announced specific protest plans; however, demonstrations are possible, especially near bus and/or autorickshaw depots, government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Striking drivers may hold sit-ins, street marches, or block arterial roads with vehicles. The largest rallies will likely occur in Khulna city. Authorities will likely monitor any gatherings and disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between protesters and police, as well as counterdemonstrators, cannot be ruled out.

Barisal Division is approximately 85 km (53 miles) east of central Khulna.

Advice

Confirm road status and transport reservations in Barisal District Nov. 4-5. Seek alternative transport, if needed. As a standard security precaution, avoid protests or navigating roadblocks. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow extra time for travel in the district for the duration of the strike. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
