Authorities are responding to a fire at the Dorf Ketal chemical factory in the Estrada da Pedreira area of Nova Santa Rita, near Porto Alegre, as of early Nov. 21. Reports indicate the incident started in the late afternoon of Nov. 20 and has resulted in several explosions. The cause of the fire remains unknown. Emergency responders have been at the scene battling the blaze since approximately 18:00. The incident has resulted in at least two injuries.

Heightened security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely over the coming hours as firefighting operations and investigations continue.

Nova Santa Rita is approximately 18 km (11 miles) north-northwest of Porto Alegre.
