Brazil: Protests denouncing presidential election results likely to continue nationwide through at least early November /update 2
Protests decrying presidential election results likely to continue across Brazil through at least early November; most blockades cleared.
Event
Protests denouncing the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as president are likely to continue in areas across Brazil through at least early November. As of Nov. 3, authorities have cleared most of the blockades that have obstructed routes across the country in recent days. Protests are easing and only six states have continued to report roadblocks, with Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso being the two states most affected by protester-erected blockades. Despite this trend, demonstrators may continue to attempt to block roads in these and other states across the country over the coming days.
Officials are likely to deploy security personnel to all protest sites. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible if protesters are overly disruptive or ignore official orders to disperse or clear main routes. Significant disruptions to intracity and intercity transport services are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests and related events as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross protester-erected roadblocks; utilize alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen impacted roads. Confirm business appointments in advance. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in affected states.
