Brazil: Authorities tighten security in Brasilia ahead of President-elect Lula da Silva's inauguration ceremony on Jan. 1
Authorities tighten security in Brasilia, Brazil, ahead of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's inauguration ceremony on Jan. 1.
Event
Officials will deploy additional security throughout Brasilia in preparation for the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, scheduled to take place at 14:00 on Jan. 1. Following a Supreme Federal Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal, STF) rule on Dec. 28, registered gun owners in Brasilia will be banned from carrying their arms until Jan. 2. The security measures are likely to be tight due to fears of violence, especially following violent unrest in recent weeks and an attack on Brasilia's federal police headquarters on Dec. 12. Authorities are likely to close roads and divert traffic around Esplanada dos Ministerios, the location of the inauguration event. Security measures are also likely to affect areas around Brasilia's Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport (BSB) and roads connecting the airport and Esplanada dos Ministerios, as several foreign leaders plan to attend the inauguration.
Transport and business disruptions are likely in Brasilia, especially along main routes, and near government buildings and other key infrastructure. Protests are possible, particularly near political events in the city. Clashes and violence are possible, especially near the inauguration event.
Advice
Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in the city until Jan. 2. Avoid all protests and large political gatherings. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
