Brazil: Protests denouncing presidential election results likely to continue through at least early January /update 5

Protests against presidential election results likely to continue in parts of Brazil through at least early January.

Warning

Event

Protests denouncing the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as Brazil's new president will likely continue through at least early January, as many protesters demand that Lula da Silva not be sworn in on Jan. 1.

Groups of protesters are still camping in Brasilia at Praca dos Cristais, also known as Praca Civica, located near the military headquarters. Authorities have blocked a large section of the Monumental Axis, also known as the Esplanada dos Ministerios, between the Ministry of Justice and the Itamaraty Palace. According to the Military Police of the Federal District, the action was taken in order to prevent large gatherings outside key government buildings, especially the National Congress. It remains unclear how long the road closure will remain in place.

While authorities have cleared hundreds of protester roadblocks that obstructed federal highways across Brazil in recent weeks and protests have lost some momentum, further disruptions remain possible. Disruptive protests are particularly likely to continue in states with higher support for President Jair Bolsonaro, such as Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, and Parana. Gatherings outside military headquarters and government buildings are also likely to continue.

Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to any demonstrations that may materialize. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. If protesters block key highways, clashes between opposing groups of protesters are also possible. Localized disruptions to intercity transport services are possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests and related events as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross protester roadblocks; utilize alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen impacted roads. Confirm business appointments in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations in affected locations.
