Officials issue warning for overflowing dams in several areas of Eswatini, Dec. 18.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy issued a statement Dec. 18 warning of overflowing dams due to heavy rainfall during the ongoing rainy season. Impacted dams include Maguga (Komati River), Mnjoli (Black Mbuluzi River), and Lubovane (Usuthu River). Officials have warned residents to exercise caution when crossing the impacted rivers due to the threat of flash flooding. The full statement is available by clicking here.

The annual rainy season is forecast to bring sustained heavy rainfall through March. As such, further flooding of local dams and rivers is likely. Overflowing rivers could damage bridges and nearby roads.

Advice

Monitor local media for updates and advisories on weather conditions. Avoid low-lying areas near streams, rivers, and other bodies of water, such as reservoirs and coastlines, due to the threat of flooding. Do not drive on flooded roads. Take precautions against insect- and waterborne diseases. Keep any necessary medications in a waterproof container.
