Heightened security likely in Doha, Qatar, during Morocco vs. Croatia match Dec. 17; localized clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Doha will likely maintain very tight security around Khalifa International Stadium, Souq Waqif, fan zones, and other popular gathering places in the Qatari capital ahead and after the FIFA World Cup match between Morocco and Croatia, scheduled to kick off at 18:00 Dec. 17. Both teams are fighting for third place, and the historic Moroccan performance during the competition has led to large celebratory gatherings in Doha.

Khalifa International Stadium has a capacity of over 45,800 seats, which, according to FIFA statements, should all be occupied. During previous matches, incidents of fans without valid tickets arriving at the stadium have caused significant delays and crowd management issues in Doha. Similar incidents will likely occur on Dec. 17, creating crowd management challenges.

Large celebratory gatherings and demonstrations are likely following the match. Qatari authorities will likely be quick to respond to any confrontations or other security incidents that may occur. Localized transport disruptions due to road closures and other security measures are possible.

Advice

Exercise increased situational awareness in Doha into at least the early morning hours of Dec. 18, particularly in the vicinity of Khalifa International Stadium and other venues where fans may hold post-match gatherings. Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel; respect local customs and avoid sensitive topics of conversation.
