Russia: Explosions reported in Bryansk and Kursk oblasts following alleged drone strikes Dec. 6

Explosions reported in Bryansk and Kursk oblasts, Russia, Dec. 6 following alleged drone strikes. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Event

Explosions at oil storage facilities in Bryansk and Kursk oblasts were reported early Dec. 6. The blasts were allegedly caused by drone strikes. According to Russian officials, oil storage facilities at the Kursk-Vostochny Airport (URS) caught fire after a drone strike; emergency crews are on the scene. URS is currently closed to civilian aviation. In Bryansk Oblast, two drones reportedly struck empty diesel fuel tanks at the Slava oil plant in the town of Surazh, prompting a precautionary emergency response. No casualties were reported in either incident.

A heightened state of military readiness is likely in Surazh and Kursk over the coming hours. Authorities will likely restrict traffic on roads around the incident sites to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles, causing localized transport disruptions.

Context

While the exact cause of the explosions is yet to be confirmed by authorities, suspicion will likely fall on Ukrainian forces amid Russia's invasion of that country. However, Ukrainian officials have yet to comment on the incidents and are unlikely to either confirm or deny their involvement in line with their policy of deliberate ambiguity.

The latest alleged drone strikes follow similar incidents targeting Russian air bases in Ryazan and Saratov on Dec. 5, which Russian authorities claimed were unsuccessful and directed from Ukraine. Regardless of Ukrainian claims of responsibility, further strikes are increasingly likely as the conflict persists and Ukrainian capabilities improve.

Advice

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional travel time to nearby destinations.
