Armenia: Activists protesting outside Russian Military Base in Gyumri, Jan. 8

Event

Armenian activists are currently protesting outside the Russian 102nd Military Base in Gyumri, Jan. 8. The purpose of the action is to demand Russian peacekeepers intervene to end a blockade of the Goris-Khankendi/Stepanakert highway. Participation is in the hundreds.

Authorities have not approved the protest. Additional security services are deployed to prevent activists from reaching the military base; related security measures including road closures and movement restrictions are prompting localized disruptions in the surrounding area. Reports suggest police have arrested several participants; isolated clashes cannot be ruled out.
