Bangladesh: Authorities impose travel ban in Thanchi, Bandarban District, Jan. 10-17

Event

Authorities have announced a tourist ban on Thanchi Subdistrict, Bandarban District, Chittagong Division, Jan. 11-17 due to ongoing security operations. An indefinite tourist travel ban continues in Rowangchhari and Ruma subdistricts. Officials initially issued a directive encompassing several subdistricts in mid-October to conduct a security operation targeting suspected militants in the impacted areas; they have consistently extended it at each scheduled expiration date. The government could extend the ban further or expand it to encompass additional areas depending on the needs of the security operation.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the affected areas. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Isolated clashes between security forces and suspected militants cannot be ruled out.

Context

Bandarban District has historically been plagued by insurgent activity; multiple foreign governments routinely advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the district. The current security operation is not necessarily indicative of a further escalation in regional security risks, which remain high.
