Brazil: Protests denouncing presidential election results likely to continue through at least mid January /update 6
Protests against presidential election results likely to continue in parts of Brazil through at least mid January.
Event
Protests denouncing the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as Brazil's new president will likely continue through at least mid January. Supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro have encamped near government buildings, disrupted roadways, and protested throughout Brazil since his election loss Oct. 30, 2022.
Disruptions to roads, including highways and routes to airports, are likely. Disruptive protests are particularly likely to continue in states with higher support for President Jair Bolsonaro, such as Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, and Parana. Gatherings outside military headquarters and government buildings are also likely to continue. Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to any demonstrations that may materialize. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. If protesters block key highways, clashes between opposing groups of protesters are also possible. Localized disruptions to intercity transport services are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests and related events as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross protester roadblocks; utilize alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen impacted roads. Confirm business appointments in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations in affected locations.
