Bangladesh: Bangladesh Awami Jubo League plans nationwide rallies through Feb. 28

Bangladesh Awami Jubo League to hold rallies across Bangladesh through Feb. 28. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Bangladesh Awami Jubo League (Jubo League), the youth organization of the ruling Awami League (AL) party, will hold rallies across the country through Feb. 28. The purpose of the action is to oppose the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) ongoing demonstrations ahead of the 2024 general elections. On Feb. 25, activists plan to stage protests across all cities and districts. On Feb. 26, demonstrators will gather at several thanas, or districts controlled by police stations, nationwide.

On Feb. 27, organizers will not hold any gatherings. On Feb. 28, activists will rally at all union councils across the country. While organizers did not announce specific assembly points, typical rally sites include political party offices, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended rallies could attract thousands of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near rally sites and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between Jubo League supporters and rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to demonstrations. Associated business disruptions may occur through Feb. 28.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to travel near sites where gatherings materialize. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
