Bangladesh: Activists to protest at the High Court building in Dhaka from 11:00 Oct. 16

Protest to occur at the High Court in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 11:00 Oct. 16. Tight security, transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Prominent student leaders have called for supporters to surround the High Court building in Dhaka, from 11:00 Oct. 16. The action is to demand the resignation of judges the organizers claim hold political bias and/or affiliation to the Awami League party which headed the recently ousted government. Hundreds of participants may join the demonstration.

Authorities will likely monitor the gathering and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists are possible, especially if activists attempt to storm the building. Arson and vandalism cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are probable as demonstrators will likely march from nearby sites such as university campuses, the Shahbagh intersection, the Suhrawardy Udyan monument, and Baitul Mukkaram National Mosque. Any road blockades will likely exacerbate traffic congestion in the vicinity. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid demonstrations due to the threat of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time in Dhaka through Oct. 16. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
