Warning

Event

Various opposition political parties in Bangladesh plan to stage rallies across the country, Feb. 11 to denounce the ruling Awami League's administration and call for price reductions on daily necessities and utilities. The largest action is likely in Dhaka, where the Ganatantra Mancha, an alliance of seven parties, plans to march from the Mirpur to the Motijhleel area, starting 10:00. Organizers say the march will pass through Farmgate, Shahbagh, and Paltan. Similar activities will also take place at district and divisional levels nationwide. Participation is likely to vary depending on location but may reach the hundreds, particularly in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also plans to launch marches at all union councils across the country Feb. 11. However, the BNP has yet to publicize the start times and march routes. Meanwhile, the Awami League plans to hold a counterprotest in Dhaka, Feb. 11. It has yet to announce details of the start time and any specific assembly point.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy additional security in and around protest sites and march routes, particularly in Dhaka. Heightened security measures and the presence of large numbers of people could lead to localized disruptions. Clashes are possible between opposing groups of protesters and between police and protesters, posing an indirect threat to people in the vicinity.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan routes circumventing the demonstration site and allow additional time for travel. Heed all official traffic and security advisories. Leave the area immediately if violence breaks out.
