Travel disruptions, business closures, and increased security are likely across Brazil through at least Feb. 25 as the nation observes its annual Carnival celebrations. While the largest events typically take place in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Salvador, street parades are likely in most cities. Assaults and petty crime, especially pickpocketing and theft, typically increase during Carnival celebrations in Brazil. The Federal Highway Police (PRF) will step up security and checks along federal highways nationwide; local authorities also typically increase police presence in the vicinity of celebratory events. Specific major events for 2023 include parades at the following locations:
Rio de Janeiro: Sapucai Sambadrome Feb. 19-20 and 25.
Sao Paulo: Anhembi Sambadrome Feb. 17-19 and 25.
Salvador: Citywide Feb. 17-22.
An estimated 40 million people could attend Carnival events nationwide. Road closures and increased traffic congestion are likely throughout Carnival. Authorities may block main thoroughfares in large cities to facilitate various celebrations. Many major airports will likely experience much higher passenger volumes throughout the Carnival season; delays are possible during check-in and security screening at airports. Large crowds and delays on public transportation are likely, as is high demand for hotel rooms, restaurants, and rental cars.
