Greece: Unionized teachers plan nationwide strike and protests Feb. 15

Unionized teachers to stage nationwide strike and protests in Greece Feb. 15. Disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The Teachers' Federation of Greece (IOE) has confirmed plans to lead demonstrations in Athens and Thessaloniki Feb. 15 amid a nationwide strike the same day. The following actions are confirmed:

  • Athens: The Propylaea, from 10:30

  • Thessaloniki: The Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, from 11:00

The purpose of the action is to demand the permanent appointment of all temporary teachers, and to protest individual evaluations for teachers, recently implemented by the Ministry of Education and regarded as unscientific by many teachers. Organizers have as yet released no details concerning protests in other cities and urban centers. The number of participants the demonstrations may draw is unclear.

The union may update or amend strike and protest details over the coming days. Increased security and localized ground travel disruptions at protest sites are likely. Demonstrations near government buildings, city centers, tourist attractions, and schools are likely. While the demonstrations will likely progress peacefully, minor scuffles between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
