Bangladesh: Unionized transport workers and owners to launch indefinite strike along Sylhet-Zakiganj route from 06:00 March 9

Unionized transport workers and owners plan indefinite strike along Sylhet-Zakiganj route in Bangladesh from 06:00 March 9.

Informational

Event

Unionized transport workers and owners will commence an indefinite strike along the Sylhet-Zakiganj route from 06:00 March 9. The purpose of the action is to demand a limited movement of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) buses on the affected route. Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely impact several modes of transportation to and from Sylhet and Zakiganj. Alternative means of transport are likely to face increased crowding and demand. Organizers have threatened to expand the labor action at the divisional level if their demands remain unmet. Zakiganj is located approximately 51 km (31 miles) southeast of Sylhet.

Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, strike-related demonstrations are possible, especially near BRTC offices, transportation hubs, government buildings, and public squares, as well as along major thoroughfares. Strike participants may hold sit-ins and street marches or block main roads with vehicles. Authorities will likely monitor any gatherings and disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between activists and police, as well as between counterdemonstrators, cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Confirm bus and other transport schedules in advance. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near any gatherings that occur.
