Police operation kills at least 11 in Sao Goncalo, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, March 23.

Authorities are carrying out a security operation in Complexo do Salgueiro, in the municipality of Sao Goncalo, March 23. The operation so far has resulted in at least 23 deaths and several people injured, including at least two civilians. Armed confrontations between the police and suspects are still ongoing, especially in the Itaoca and Palmeiras areas of Complexo do Salgueiro. The security operation is reportedly targeting members of gangs, including the Red Command (Comando Vermelho, CV), one of Brazil's most powerful drug-trafficking organizations. Sao Goncalo is located around 30 km (18 miles) from the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Security personnel is likely to remain deployed in the area in the coming hours; armed confrontations will likely continue. Significant disruptions to public transport and business are likely to continue through at least March 24.
