Greece: Additional protests likely in Athens through at least early March
Further protests likely in Athens, Greece, through at least early March in reaction to fatal train collision in Tempi.
Event
Additional protests are likely in Athens through at least early March in response to a deadly train collision that took place near Tempi, Larissa, late Feb. 28. Student activists clashed with police during a demonstration outside the Hellenic Train headquarters late March 1; protesters also attempted to march to the Hellenic Parliament building. Several labor unions and the Greek Women's Federation have planned new protests to take place at the offices of Hellenic Train starting at 18:00 March 2.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heavy police presence near any such gatherings that may materialize. Transport and business disruptions are likely near demonstrations. Additional clashes between activist groups and security personnel cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
