Event

Authorities are continuing emergency response operations following the collision of two trains in Tempi, near Larissa, March 1. Officials have confirmed at least 36 fatalities and 85 injuries as of March 1. The accident occurred at approximately 23:00 Feb. 28 when an intercity train on the Larissa-Thessaloniki route crashed into a freight train. Fires reportedly broke out in several carriages immediately after the collision. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the collision as of March 1. The commuter train was carrying around 350 passengers; officials will likely update casualty figures as operations continue.

Emergency and security presence will likely remain in the area over the coming days as crews continue with rescue and recovery operations. Hellenic Train, Greece's main passenger and freight rail operator, suspended all services scheduled for March 1 from 12:00. Increased demand for alternative transport and increased road traffic congestion is likely as a result. Greek officials have declared a three-day national mourning period during which all public celebrations are canceled.
