Greece: Railway workers extend strike through March 5 /update 1

Railway workers in Greece extend strike through March 5. Rail services suspended; increased demand for other forms of transport likely.

Warning

Event

The Panhellenic Federation of Railway Employees (POS) has extended its nationwide strike action through March 5. The action began March 2 to protest the government's alleged negligence that led to a fatal train collision Feb. 28. POS could extend the strike further on short notice. All Hellenic Train services are suspended during the strike. Striking workers will reportedly participate in a demonstration at Syntagma Square at 11:00 March 5.

Rail service disruptions will likely continue for the duration of the strike. Increased demand for alternative transport and increased road traffic congestion are likely. Police will likely deploy to monitor the March 5 demonstration, and large crowds and associated security measures will probably prompt disruptions in the surrounding area. Clashes between protesters and security services are likely; riot police may quickly resort to using tear gas and similar measures against unruly crowds.

Advice

Make alternative arrangements if traveling by rail in Greece through March 5. Confirm rail schedules before travel over the following days and plan for delays and disruptions to passenger and freight services. Follow local travel and security advice. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
