A magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred in West Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran at around 15:17 March 16. The epicenter was about 13 km (8 miles) southeast of Khowy. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and moderate-to-light shaking was probably felt close to the epicenter, as well as light shaking throughout parts of northwestern Iran, northeastern Iraq, southeastern Turkey (Turkiye), western Azerbaijan, and southern and central Armenia. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. Some minor damage to rudimentary infrastructure is possible close to the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
