Germany: Unionized rail workers to strike nationwide the morning of April 21

Unionized rail workers in Germany will strike nationwide 03:00-11:00 April 21. Rail service disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Rail workers affiliated with the Railway and Transport Union (EVG) will observe strike action nationwide 03:00-11:00 April 21. Unionized workers will down tools at national rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) and around 50 other rail companies amid stalled wage negotiations. While the strike is set to be lifted at 11:00, long-distance trains may experience disruptions throughout the day as trains will be unable to begin their routes in the early morning.

Unless averted, the strike will likely result in significant disruptions to rail services throughout the country, particularly through the morning rush hour. Increased congestion is likely on available rail services and other forms of transportation during the strike. Protests by striking employees are possible at major train stations. Some disruption may linger beyond the end of the strike as rail operators reposition rolling stock.

Advice

Check rail service schedules and follow local travel and security advice. Consider alternative transport options, if necessary. Allow additional time for travel.
