Anti-government protests possible across Sierra Leone during Independence Day April 27. Increased security likely.

Informational

Event

Officials will likely deploy heightened security measures across the country, notably in Freetown, amid possible anti-government protests during the country’s Independence Day April 27. Authorities have warned citizens to ignore social media incitement and refrain from joining unauthorized gatherings.

The heightened security posture may include roadblocks, checkpoints, and searches of vehicles or personnel prior to and during April 27. Localized commercial and transport disruptions are likely due to planned celebrations and business closures. Clashes with security forces are possible in the event of spontaneous anti-government demonstrations.

Context

Officials are particularly vigilant following an eruption of violence in August 2022. On Aug. 10, demonstrations erupted across the country, particularly eastern Freetown, over the country's cost of living and soon devolved into violence, including acts of vandalism and attacks on security personnel. The demonstrations followed various calls on social media to participate in anti-government protests. Authorities imposed a nationwide curfew the same day through April 13 to quell the unrest. The violence left at least 21 civilians and six police personnel dead.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming, or security forces are deploying. Shelter in place if significant violent unrest erupts. Plan for movement and business disruptions through April 27.
