Sierra Leone: Power outages likely nationwide, notably Freetown, through late April

Power outages likely across Sierra Leone, notably Freetown, through at least late April.

Informational

Power outages are likely nationwide, particularly in Freetown, through at least late April. The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) announced on April 16 that the recurrent reduced power supply affecting Freetown is caused by challenges along the supply chain. Other reports attribute the electricity disruptions to unpaid bills. The recurrent outages have caused mounting anger and disruptions to essential services such as hospitals.

Temporary commercial and communications disruptions are possible in the areas affected by the outage. Traffic lights may not function, resulting in traffic disruptions, and public transport that relies on power may be affected. The outage could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential facilities such as ATMs and filling stations. Related protests remain increasingly possible to denouce the outages.

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Plan for disruptions to business and utility services and possible road travel delays due to malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices when necessary. Follow local travel and security advice.
