Increased security, tensions likely in Sierra Leone through at least June 24 anniversary of disputed 2023 general election. Protests likely.

Warning

Heightened security and political tensions are likely across Sierra Leone through at least the June 24 anniversary of the nation's disputed 2023 general elections. Tensions will probably increase markedly starting June 19 when the Tripartite Committee on Electoral Systems Review plans to release its final report on its investigation into alleged irregularities, electoral malpractice, and fraud during the 2023 polls. The Sierra Leone Police have increased patrols and other security deployments, particularly in Freetown, for the June 19-24 time frame. Moreover, authorities are urging the public to go about their daily business normally.

Although no group has as yet announced specific plans for such gatherings, protests and other demonstrations are possible, regardless of the findings in the Tripartite Committee's report. Increased security and localized travel disruptions are likely near any rallies that may materialize. Clashes between protesters and security forces, or among rival activist groups, are possible. Officials could impose temporary curfews depending on operational security needs.

Exercise increased situational awareness if operating in Sierra Leone, particularly in Freetown, through at least June 24. Avoid all demonstrations, government buildings, and areas where security forces appear to be deploying. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernment building. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations or host organizations.

The Tripartite Committee is a body comprised of representatives from the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), the main opposition All People's Congress (APC), and the international community. It is tasked with resolving plausible electoral disputes. On June 14, the APC withdrew from the committee, alleging that dialog with the SLPP government had failed.

Political tensions have been high in Sierra Leone since the nation's June 24, 2023, general election. The country's Electoral Commission declared that incumbent President Julius Maada Bio from the ruling SLPP the winner, securing a second term in office. However, opposition candidate Samura Kamara from the APC rejected the results, with the matter remaining contentious.
