Sierra Leone: Protests possible nationwide after court charges former president on Jan. 3 in connection with failed November coup attempt

Protests possible across Sierra Leone after court charges former President Koroma Jan. 3 over failed November coup attempt.

Informational

Protests are possible across Sierra Leone through at least mid-January after a court charged the nation's former President Ernest Bai Koroma on Jan. 3 in connection with a Nov. 26 failed coup attempt in Freetown. Koroma has been charged with four offenses, including treason. At least 11 other people, including the former president’s bodyguard, have been charged. Additional persons will probably be charged in the coming days.

Protests will be most likely in the north and west of Sierra Leone where the strongholds of Koroma's All People’s Congress (APC) party are located. Activists could also gather at the APC headquarters in Freetown, as well as facilities associated with the nation's judiciary, such as courthouses or Ministry of Justice offices.

Heightened security and localized travel delays are likely near any gatherings that may materialize. Clashes between protesters and security forces, or among rival activist groups, are possible. Officials could impose temporary curfews to prevent violence or in the event of significant unrest.

Exercise increased situational awareness if operating in Sierra Leone, particularly in Freetown. Avoid all demonstrations, government buildings, and areas where security forces appear to be deploying. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernment building. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations or host organizations.
