Authorities in Gelsenkirchen plan to defuse an unexploded WWII-era bomb in the city's Bulmke-Hullen District beginning 14:00 May 11. The device was reportedly found during construction work on the Sellmannsbach. Authorities have instructed some 7,200 residents within a 600-meter (0.4-mile) radius of the site to evacuate the area by 12:30. Schools and day-care centers within the evacuation radius will also be closed. Road closures will be implemented on several thoroughfares, including Borgmannshof, Bornstrasse, and Damaschkestrasse. Officials did not immediately give an estimate as to how long the operation will last.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in the area for the duration of the operation. The security perimeter and associated road closures will prompt localized disruptions to business and transport.
