UK: Unionized railway workers to strike nationwide May 31, June 2-3
Labor unions call for further nationwide rail strikes in the UK, May 31 and June 2-3; rail travel disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized railway workers represented by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) and Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) unions have announced separate strike days across the country, May 31, and June 2-3. Members of ASLEF will participate in nationwide strikes on May 31 and June 3, and RMT members will strike June 2. Both labor unions are calling for improved pay.
National Rail, the UK's rail network operator, has announced that services will be affected on all service providers, including Avanti West Coast, C2C, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Northern, Great Western Railway, Greater Anglia (including Stansted Express), LNER, London Northwestern Railway, Northern Rail, South Western Railway, Southeastern (ASLEF days only), Southern (including Gatwick Express), Thameslink, TransPennine Express, and West Midlands Railway.
The strike will likely cause significant disruptions to rail transport services throughout the UK. Rail services on June 1 may also be affected, as service providers recover from the previous day of industrial action and prepare for the next. Increased demand for other forms of transportation is likely. Lingering disruptions are likely after the strike concludes as operators reposition rolling stock. Striking workers may protest outside railway stations and other transport hubs.
Advice
Reconfirm rail booking and travel plans May 31-June 3. Follow local travel and security advice. Avoid any demonstrations that could materialize as a precaution.
