Greece: Activist protests over migration policy may continue in various urban centers through June /update 1

Activist protests over migration policy may continue in various urban centers in Greece, including Athens, through June.

Informational

Event

Activists from various organizations may continue to protest in urban centers nationwide through June in response to the June 14 shipwreck off Pylos which left dozens of migrants dead. Protests have been held in various locations, including Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, and Kalamata, in recent days. An anarchist group has reportedly called for a protest near the Propylaia (Acropolis) in Athens from 19:00 June 22.

Security forces are likely to deploy to protest sites. Demonstrations are likely in city centers, near prominent government buildings, and public squares. A few hundred people could attend each event. Clashes have been reported between demonstrators and police recently. Further confrontations are possible. Demonstrators could march in nearby streets and city centers, prompting disruptions to road travel. Greece will hold a legislative election on June 25; the Pylos incident may feature prominently in some election-related rallies and events.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. Allow extra time to reach destinations in areas impacted by protest activity.
