Brazil: Police operation ongoing in Rio de Janeiro's Complexo da Penha and Quitungo areas early July 6

Authorities are carrying out a security operation in the Complexo da Penha and Quitungo areas of northern Rio de Janeiro, July 6. Armed confrontations between suspects and security forces are being reported in the area. Authorities have arrested at least eight individuals as of 07:20; no casualties have been confirmed as of writing.

The operation may disrupt traffic in the affected area, including along Red Line Expressway (Linha Vermelha), which leads to Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG). Heightened security and disruptions are likely to continue through at least late July 6.
