Warning

Event

Emergency crews are working to contain a wildfire burning near Behchoko, North Slave Region, Northwest Territories. As of late July 25, the fire was approximately 63,441 hectares (156,766 acres) in size and has reached within 5 km (3 miles) east of Edzo and 7 km (4 miles) southeast of Rae. The fire remains 45 km (28 miles) northwest of Yellowknife and is not threatening the city. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire; hot and dry conditions may hamper firefighting efforts over the coming days. Additional wildfire growth is likely.

Authorities are evacuating Behchoko residents and have advised residents along Highway 3 between kilometers 256 and 290 to evacuate the area. An emergency shelter is located at the Multiplex Arena in Yellowknife. The fire breached Highway 3 at kilometer 278 the afternoon of July 25; the highway is closed at kilometer 246-334 from Behchoko to Yellowknife. Reports indicate power outages in Behchoko and Yellowknife; authorities have since restored power in Yellowknife and Edzo. Environment Canada has issued special air quality statements across most of the Northwest Territories due to the impact of smoke from the wildfires.

Depending on the progression of the wildfires, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities could close additional routes within the wildfire complexes and evacuate more communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operators. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
