Ghana: Trade Union Congress calls for nationwide strike from July 10

Trade Union Congress calls for strike across Ghana from July 10. Disruptions to transport, other services, and protests possible.

Informational

Event

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), one of the largest confederations in Ghana, has called for a nationwide indefinite strike from July 10. The call comes after the company Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited fired three employees for joining a union. The level of adherence to the work stoppage is unclear. Sunon Asogli Staff Association representing about 70 percent of the staff at Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, announced they will not participate in the action it deems unproductive. However, unionized employees in other companies may still participate in support of the sacked employees. Negotiations between unions and company officials are ongoing to reinstate the employees.

Unless averted, the action may cause disruptions to business operations, transport, and other services such as administration and healthcare. Related protests are possible, particularly in urban centers such as Accra, Kumasi, or Tamale. Clashes with security forces remain possible if striking participants are overly disruptive or security forces attempt to disperse them.

Advice

Confirm all appointments and travel plans from July 10 as a precaution. Avoid all demonstrations. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed instructions from security services.
