Evacuations ordered in and around Nea Anchialos, Greece, after wildfires cause explosions at nearby Air Force munitions depot July 27.
Event
Greek authorities have implemented an evacuation order in and around Nea Anchialos after a wildfire caused at least three explosions at a military ammunition depot July 27. The depot belongs to the Greek Air Force's 111th Fighter Wing headquartered at Nea Anchialos National Airport (VOL), although it is reportedly located several kilometers north of that facility. The evacuation order is in force for a 3 km (1.9 miles) radius around the explosion site; the order could be expanded with little-to-no advance notice.
As a result of the evacuations, there are significant ground transport disruptions in the Nea Anchialos area and increased demand for water transport. Emergency teams, including firefighters and ambulances, are responding to the blaze; however, there have as yet been no official reports of casualties.
Advice
Strictly heed all evacuation orders and other instructions from local authorities. If near the affected zone, prepare a go-bag containing the essentials for quick relocation in the event evacuation mandates are expanded.
