LGBTQ activists to demonstrate in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece, from 20:00 July 12. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

LGBTQ rights organizations have called for demonstrations in Athens and Thessaloniki on July 12 to denounce racism, transphobia, and hate crimes after a transgender woman was reportedly found murdered in her apartment in Athens on July 11. In Athens, LGBTQ rights activists will gather in Syntagma Square from around 20:00 for a rally in front of the Greek Parliament. In Thessaloniki, activists will gather at the same time at the Arch of Galerius (also known as Kamara) on Egnatia Street. Several hundred activists will likely attend each demonstration.

Authorities will likely deploy additional police to monitor the gatherings. Related security measures may prompt localized traffic disruptions. Demonstrators in both cities could march through nearby roads before and after the primary gatherings. Violence is not anticipated.

Advice

Avoid the protests as a standard precaution and to mitigate disruptions. Plan for some road travel delays in the vicinity of each gathering on the evening of July 12. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
