Bangladesh: BNP to hold demonstrations in Dhaka city Aug. 25

Bangladesh Nationalist Party to stage marches across Dhaka, Bangladesh, Aug. 25. Increased security, disruptions likely. Clashes possible.

Informational

Event

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold marches in Dhaka Metropolitan North and South areas Aug. 25. The action is part of a series of protests demanding the current government to resign and allow a non-partisan caretaker government to oversee the next general elections scheduled early 2024. Specific details are unclear. Rallies typically occur following congregational prayers in the afternoon, especially near political party offices, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Previous similar events have attracted up to a few thousand participants. The BNP may reschedule and/or cancel their planned events at short notice due to organizational or law enforcement-related restrictions.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor the rallies and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between members of rival political camps, cannot be ruled out. Officials could conduct mass arrests and/or resort to the use of force, including baton charges and tear gas, in response to any security incidents. Traffic disruptions are likely along march routes. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
