Bangladesh: Officials likely to maintain increased security in multiple locations through early December /update 1
Authorities likely to maintain increased security in Barisal, Chattogram, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, through early December following unrest.
Officials part of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will likely maintain increased security across multiple cities through early December following protests and clashes between supporters of Hindu religious leader Chandan Kumar Dhar and the police on Nov. 25-26. Chinmoy had been arrested on Nov. 25 on alleged charges of sedition, prompting protests to occur outside Shahbag Square in Dhaka, Cheragi Pahar Square in Chattogram, and near the Town Hall in Barisal on Nov. 25. An additional demonstration occurred outside the Chattogram magistrate's court premises Nov. 26. Authorities have responded to these demonstrations by deploying four platoons at Dhaka's Shahbagh, Hotel Intercontinental intersection, and Motsya Bhaban, with six other platoons to patrol Chattogram.
If further demonstrations occur, additional security measures will likely be implemented in additional cities like Barisal. Additional clashes cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions will likely occur, and associated business disruptions are possible.
As a standard precaution, avoid any demonstration that emerges. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected areas and any disruptions. Immediately depart the location at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
