Bangladesh: Women's rights activists to block roads and waterways in Rangamati Hill District 06:00-12:00 Aug. 30 as an act of protest

Activists affiliated with the Hill Women's Federation and Chittagong Hill Tracts Women's Association plan to protest in Rangamati Hill District 06:00-12:00 Aug. 30. The purpose of the action is to demand the revocation of interim bail granted to a convicted rapist by the High Court. As a part of their action, demonstrators plan to block traffic along local roadways and waterways; however, organizers have indicated that emergency vehicles and vehicles carrying journalists will be allowed to pass. Although it remains unclear how many participants the protests may draw, large crowds are unlikely.

Authorities will probably monitor the protests as a precaution. Isolated skirmishes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely to occur through at least the afternoon of Aug. 30. Associated business disruptions are possible.
