Warning

Event

A security operation in the Santos Metropolitan Area (Baixada Santista), which has resulted in at least 58 arrests and 15 deaths, is likely to continue through mid-August. The operation, dubbed "Shield" (Escudo), was launched to fight organized crime and drug trafficking in Santos Metropolitan Region following the killing of a police officer in the Guaruja area in late July. As the operation continues, armed clashes and police raids are likely in some areas of the Santos Metropolitan Area, especially in Guaruja.

Heightened security is likely to remain in place in the area, and the police may carry out further arrests and investigations. The operation may disrupt traffic in the affected area, especially in Guaruja. Further armed clashes between officers and suspects remain possible in the area.

Advice

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid traveling to or through the affected areas of the Santos Metropolitan Area. If within or near the affected areas, remain in accommodations until police give the all-clear.
