India: Clashes between protesting workers and police reported near the Gangavaram Port, Visakhapatnam, afternoon of Aug. 17

Police are clashing with protesting labor union members of the Adani Gangavaram Port in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the afternoon of Aug. 17. Security personnel have erected barricades and are blocking a planned siege of the port by activists demanding reinstation of laid-off employees and wage hikes for contract workers. Initial reports indicate at least ten police officers and multiple demonstrators are injured. Although port operations are unaffected, limited disruptions to facilitate a security response are possible.

Heightened security posture and localized traffic disruptions are almost certain in the coming hours. Additional clashes cannot be ruled out. Authorities may impose enhanced restrictions such as curtailing public movement and/or telecommunication services like mobile internet to prevent or control further violence.
