Sierra Leone: Increased security is likely through early August following the alleged arrest of senior military personnel

Increased security is likely through early August following the alleged arrest of senior military officers in Sierra Leone.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely nationwide through early August after security forces allegedly arrested several people, including senior military officials. According to a police press release dated July 31, the arrested group had planned to use planned protests Aug. 7-10 as a vehicle to conduct attacks against state institutions. Further information is unavailable.

Security personnel will likely maintain an elevated security posture in the coming days. Additional security measures may include checkpoints and random searches of vehicles and pedestrians. If the threat is assessed as ongoing additional measures, such as curfews or entry restrictions, may be imposed.

Context

Incumbent President Julius Maada Bio from the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLP) recently secured a second successive mandate during the presidential election held June 24 with 56.17 % of the votes. However, tensions have remained particularly elevated after opposition candidate Samura Kamara from the All People's Congress (APC), who came second with 41.16 %, rejected the results.

Advice

Maintain close contact with diplomatic representations and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
