Armenia: Protests likely in Yerevan through Sept. 21 in response to Azerbaijani military operations in Nagorno Karabakh

Protests likely in Yerevan, Armenia through Sept. 21. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Protests by residents of Yerevan are likely through Sept. 21 in response to renewed Azerbaijani military operations in the Nagorno Karabakh region, ostensibly targeting ethnically Armenian separatist forces. On Sept. 19, at least 500 protestors gathered at the Government of Armenia building. Demonstrators are calling for either Armenian military intervention in the conflict or the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Protests are likely to continue at the Government of Armenia building and may gather at other locations, including other government buildings, Republic Square, and Freedom Square.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely, particularly near government buildings. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers are possible.

Context

Following military setbacks in the Second Nagorno Karabakh War in 2020, Armenian nationalist and opposition groups have regularly protested in Yerevan to denounce Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Protest activity typically increases in the wake of Azerbaijani military operations in Nagorno Karabakh or perceived incidents of atrocities against Nagorno Karabakh civilians.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Allow additional time if traveling in central Yerevan. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any violent confrontation may occur. Heed instructions from authorities.
